1895 1C AU58BN PCGS #30060

Bought 24 Jan 2010 from Heritage Auctions Gorgeous reverse toning with brick Red, Magenta, and Violet covering brilliant pristine surfaces!! Someday I'll learn to capture beautiful tone on coins with pictures, but for now, this is the best I can do... The coin in hand is much more exciting than the picture allows! I paid too much, but then again, you can never pay too much for great coins!

This coin was in an ICCS holder (RO 361) as an MS62 Red & Brown... Sent in and graded 63 BN which it is probably due to the coin toning down since the original grade. Bought at the Conroe Coin Convention 17 Jan 2025

Bought raw and certified

1893 1C TP9 AU58BN PCGS #543965

Bought raw decades ago and certified 1 Dec 2024. I did not think the coin would grade as high as it did!! The coin was purchased as just an 1893 as I did not have much knowledge about Canadian coins back then... For that matter, still don't know much on the entire Coinage series. My focus on Canadian Coinage is just on the Large Cent series with varieties so this coin was a very pleasant surprise!

1881-H 1C Doubled Die Obv AU55BN PCGS #596404

Bought at auction with Stack's Bowers Jan 2025.... Brisk bidding!! I believe this coin to be much rarer than thought?? I have seen some 1881 Canadian Large Cents that have been classified as Doubled Die Obverse coins, yet with far less doubling on the coins Obverse lettering... I assume there are more than just one doubled Die Obverse for this date??? What intrigues me about this coin is the doubling is very strong; not as strong as the famous United States 1955 Doubled Die Cent, but for the Canadian Large Cent collector, a coin with nice strong doubling and huge collector appeal. If I was comparing, I'd guess this coin in the realm of Canadian Large Cents holds very strong interest from the novice to the professional expert!? One would think more of this variety would have been certified to date since the doubling is easy to spot?

1881-H 1C Triple Punch N in REGINA VF25BN PCGS #622465

Bought raw and certified May 2025

1881-H 1C Triple Punch N in REGINA AU58BN PCGS #622465

POP 1 in 58...Cherry picked and certified DEC 2024. A tough variety that is still findable, but is elusive!! Bought raw at a small local show.

1881-H 1C Triple Punch N in REGINA AU58BN PCGS #622465

POP 1 in 58...Cherry picked and certified DEC 2024. A tough variety that is still findable, but is elusive!! Bought raw at a small local show.

1980 100 P World Cup, (80) MS66 PCGS #170153

!! They should fingerprint all the coin handlers at PCGS to see which of them "FAT FINGERED" my 100 Peseta Mundial coin!!!?? Obviously, this is not a coin I would have sent in with an almost full fingerprint!!! Granted, a very inexpensive coin, but should have been given the same care, and careful handling as the 50K coin!

1887-MP M 20 Pta (1961) MS65 PCGS #541201

Bought From Stack's Bowers in May of 2024. For a Restrike coin from Spain, I was surprised the bidding went as high as it did! Obviously, someone else also wanted this particular coin? The Stack's Bowers cataloguer had mistakenly listed the mintage as 11,000 struck. This mintage is for the 1962 coin, but this coin being the 1961 Restrike actually had a mintage of only 800... Out of the ten different date Franco era Restrikes, this date is the 3rd lowest mintage out of the possible 10 dates!

1878-DE M 10 Pta (1962) MS67 PCGS #569084

Purchased this coin in an NGC MS67 holder from Bob Steinberg about 6 years ago... Crossed it over earlier this year into the PCGS MS67 holder.

1984-M 2 Pta MS66 PCGS #717227

This coin is severely under graded!! This picture does no justice to this coin.... I would say easily an MS67+ PLUS... This was picked out of an original roll which I bought in 1984 at the Banco Hispanamericano which was located on Torrejon Air Base, Spain. The surfaces are dazzling and semi prooflike which unfortunately were not picked up by the PCGS True View photo. At some point I should have this regraded to see if they; 1 upgrade it, and 2 give it a Semi PL, or PL designation??

1975 5 Pta World Cup Mule (80) MS67 PCGS #717244

Bought these errors decades ago when other dealers in Madrid told me I was crazy for wasting my time on them! Having been stationed in Spain when these were minted and subsequent years, I have some insight on their history…. Most offered to me over the years were not gems with a large number having been cleaned and or weakly struck as many were…. Out of an estimated mintage of 30,000 pieces, many pieces were mishandled, and cleaned leaving a minuscule amount which may or may not grade choice or gem uncirculated. I would wager very few gems exist?? PCGS needs to look at their weighting system for this variety as it is NOT A common coin and should be weighted about an 8, not the 1 it is weighted at! I would surmise this variety is approximately 200 to 300 times the value of all the coins of this set combined!?

1937 25C KM-753 MS66 PCGS #849145

Bought in Madrid, Spain from Longtime dealer friend (50+ Years) Juan Penas. This coin was out of about a half roll of the 25 Centimos coins I bought which all had this underlaying beautiful toning! I thought it had a shot to grade a bit higher as you normally do not see these so mark-free as this one! It's always exciting to find coins like this which are not rare or scarce or even expensive, just very nice for the type!

1937 50C Beaded, (34) MS65RD PCGS #849151

Hard to find nice 50 Centimos in blazing full Red, and especially interesting is the clashed die images on the reverse of this coin! Almost a full outline shows but you have to look for it!

1937 50C Rectangles, (36) MS65RD PCGS #849157

Bought in a small coin shop in Bilbao, Spain. Quadrados, Squared or Rectangles.... Whatever you want to call the beads around the reverse design are a bit more elusive than the dot pattern. What is ever harder to find are these coins with legible dates struck into the stars on either side of the 1937 date. The actual date these coins were issued was 1934 and 1936 with the 3 and 6 being struck into the small stars on either side of the 1937 date. More often than not, these tiny numerals inside the stars did not strike up well with what I would say being the majority of this design not having an actual date other than the 1937 at the base. Additionally, I do not know why they struck these coins 3 years prior (1934) to the main emission date of 1937, and then again in 1936; the only 2 years these Copper 50 Centimos coins were struck? Usually, the principal date when Spanish coins are first struck coincides with the same date in one or two small stars with the date's digits. If anybody reading this knows the answer to this, please let me know!? And Yes, I realize this was in the middle of the Spanish Civil War so I would assume this had a lot to do with production issues??

1940 10C PLUS MS64 PCGS #849163

POP 1 Coin..! Additionally, the obverse has a bit of clashed die showing just below the horse and in front of the rider's Right foot, and in the date box between the 9 and 4!! The coin also has some small rim cuds just above the rider's helmet...

1944 Peseta MS67 PCGS #849167

Bought this Gem in Plaza Mayor, Madrid, Spain... This is a one year type which I've always admired as a classic Spanish design... POP 1 !

1794 1/2C PO1BN PCGS #1003

1859 1C PO1 PCGS #2052

Made... Bought raw at a local coin show... This has been a very tough date to find in Pr01 as Copper Nickel cents tended to wear very well over the years.

1864 1C Copper-Nickel FR2 PCGS #2070

Bought raw and certified.... This is one of my uglier Indian Cents!!

1864 1C Bronze FR2BN PCGS #2076

Bought Raw and certified... Apart from the Copper Oxide around the devices on the reverse, I would have thought this coin would have graded Pr01??

1865 1C Fancy 5 PO1BN PCGS #2082

Bought in a Pr01 ANACS holder, cracked out and certified.

1867 1C FR2BN PCGS #2088

Bought Raw and certified... This coin beats the PCGS Photograde Pr01 example hands down... This coin is one of many of this date I've tried to certify with overall wear which should obtain a Pr01, yet still do not have a Pr01...

1870 1C PO1BN PCGS #2097

POP 1... Bought raw and certified.

1872 1C PO1BN PCGS #2103

1873 1C Doubled Liberty G4BN PCGS #2115

Bought certified in PCGS G4 on E-Bay May of 2021

1875 1C PO1BN PCGS #2121

This is one of the most common Low Ball Indian Cents in the series. Probably one of the very first coins to be added to this set. The current coin I bought raw at a small local show in July of 2025 and certified as I liked this coin more than the one in the set. This coin has much nicer, smoother surfaces than my previous coin, hence the replacement...

1878 1C FR2BN PCGS #2130

If I ever write a book on Low Ball coins, I think I'll use this as the dust cover photo!! A bit of Brick Red color here and there, with good honest wear which should have graded a Pr01 IMHO... Bought raw and certified.

1881 1C PO1BN PCGS #2139

1867 2C Doubled Die Obverse FR2BN PCGS #3594

MADE POP 1 Lowest Graded. This coin has a long history! Bought raw and PCGS graded Ag Details "Scratched", broke out and ANACS Graded Fr2 Details "Scratched", Broke out and NGC would not grade it a DDO, saying; "Too worn to grade a DDO"! So, NGC graded it straight grade (No Scratch); "Mint Error Fr2 BN Rotated Dies". The Obverse "Scratch" is there, but really not so prominent that dictates a "Details" holder; accordingly, the last 2 grades by both NGC and PCGS finally got this right... This is clearly an 1867 Doubled Die according to many experts including Kevin Flynn's book that shows a very good picture of the Left Arrow's trailing edge point doubling! Since this area is slightly protected, it is the only pick up point once wear has erased the "In God We Trust" motto which is doubled. This doubled die is one of the nicer doubled dies out there, and still Cherry Pickable!

Made!! POP 1 This is one of the very toughest coins to find in the 97 Piece Type Set in Poor! The total POP for the entire series in Pr01 is just 2 pieces; this one and an 1865. Bought raw on E-Bay.... Couldn't believe it was listed, and didn't know if it would grade?? (This due to previous episodes)....... I've bought a couple Jefferson Nickels which I thought had a shot, but were rejected by PCGS as many things other than a straight grade coin...

A prime example of PCGS’s inability to execute their main goal of consistency in the coin grading realm. First time submission, the Coin was rejected as “No Number” meaning they didn’t look hard enough to find the date on the coin. The second time around, the grader actually looked at the coin and realized there was a date! Granted, it’s a heck of a lot easier to grade a Mint State Morgan Dollar versus grading a worn out Low Ball coin! Grading Low Ball coins is more tedious, AND you actually have to inspect the coins!! ☹

1814 10C Small Date AG3 PCGS #4489

Great Collections. A tough date that has 1 coin lower in Fr2; none in Pr01! Pretty rainbow toning in the Obverse fields makes this an attractive Low Ball Piece... For some reason, even though the coin clearly shows it being graded AG03 on the holder as well as the 03 grade identifier placed after the PCGS coin number, the grade attached to the certificate number in PCGS's computers comes up as a Good 4!!?? I'd call the coin a very strong AG03 or an AG03+... Hopefully, a quick IT fix will take care of this?

This coin is a neat POP 1 coin which had a good sized mintage, but extremely tough to acquire in high grade. For some reason, it is also hard to find in undamaged low grade as well! Also have picked a couple of the 42-O Small "O" F104 varieties as well in G4 and G6...

Bought raw on Ebay and certified... Only a POP 2 in AG3 with nothing certified in lower grades!!?

1850 10C FR2 PCGS #4593

Another very low POP (2) in FR2 with only 1 lower! Did most of these early dimes that appeared to be worn out end up in the melting pots due to dealers and the public thinking they had no use to collectors? This is a prime example of why Low Ball collecting is so fascinating!! This particular example is really ROUGH! Surprised the graders gave it a pass...

1850-O 10C FR2 PCGS #4594

This coin stands out with being a POP 1 example in FR2 with nothing certified lower! With a large mintage you would think this coin would be plentiful in lower circulated grades; especially for the Low Ball enthusiasts? Bought raw and certified

1851 10C AG3 PCGS #4595

Bought raw and certified in 2022. when there were only 2 coins in AG3 and nothing lower... Since then 2 coins have been certified in FR2 so it appears there are more Low Ball enthusiasts possibly working on the Seated Liberty Dime Low Ball Set!??

1875-CC 10C Mintmark Above Bow PO1 PCGS #4673

Picked out of a junk box at the Hot Springs Ark Coin Show in 2021. This could be the "Poster Coin" for Low Ball Collectors, absolutely no Obverse details, and only the "CC" mintmark showing above Bow on the reverse. Seated Dime collectors immediately understand this coin to be a one year type, hence it doesn't need to have the date showing as it can only be an 1875! This was one of the high points at the Hot Springs show...

1884-S 10C FR2 PCGS #4693

This is the "Famous" Charles Manske coin!! I ran across a story (Early 2022) about finding this coin in a recent roll search in the Gobrecht Journal which was complete with photos of the coin... I thought the coin had a good shot at grading a PR01, and I needed the coin for my Low Ball set... Contacted the author of the story, Charles and at first, he didn't want to sell as he was "Attached" to the coin and the story... Many months later he sold the coin to me... It didn't grade the Poor I thought it would, but made a FR2 which I was happy with... Funny story continued... Fast forward 2 years later to a coin show in Conroe, Texas and I'm sitting at a dealers table asking if he has any Low Ball type coins? The person sitting next to me turns and says; I know you!! I look at the person and have no idea who he is, and he introduces himself as none other than Charles Manske!! We have never met, and only spoken on the phone, and I believe he is from the Northeast!! What are the chances of this brief encounter more than a thousand miles from home??? Small world... Thanks again Charles... BTW.... I still think the coin should have graded a PR01...!

1885 10C FR2 PCGS #4694

POP 1... Bought in an ANACS FR2 holder and cracked out and certified raw. I thought it had a really good chance (50-50) at down-grading to a PR01...

Bought raw and certified; beautiful Obverse color... Should be in a Pr01 holder!

1840-O 25C No Drapery PO1 PCGS #5393

This is one of the tougher Low Ball Coins in the entire type series! Until this coin was graded Pr01 there were no coins graded by PCGS of the 3 possible No Drapery dates; 38, 39, & 40-O graded in Poor! Found raw on E-bay and listed just as an 1840 Liberty Seated Quarter....?? The seller didn't realize first to list it as a "No Drapery Date", and second, it had to be a New Orleans Mint coin being such even though the reverse was too worn to discern even a partial "O" mintmark! I wondered if anybody else had caught these facts and waited... Another friend in the Low Ball community encountered this same coin and was wondering the same thing! Talk about a Mad Magazine flash back; "Spy vs Spy"! We had to wait until the very last second to see if either of us was the only person who noticed! We both bid strong numbers on the coin, and I was the fortunate winner... The following morning I got the phone call... Did you.....???? 😊

Bought raw from Harry S. in July 2022. This is another coin that is a POP 1 coin with only 1 coin graded by PCGS lower! Were dates like this and coins of the era like the 1850 of which the lowest graded is AG3, melted in the early to mid 1850's, or were heavily circulated pieces sent to the melting pots decades if not a century later when Silver jumped above normal pricing levels??

1852-O 25C AG3 PCGS #5420

Bought raw from Greg M. and certified. POP 2 nothing lower. Another one to wonder; were most melted??

1853 25C No Arrows G6 PCGS #5421

1853 25C Arrows and Rays PO1 PCGS #5426

Made... After 2 body bags; "Authenticity Unverifiable" due (?) to no date showing, I pointed out to the Grading Gods that a date is not necessary on certain one-year type coins, per their "Official Grading Guide".... Graded!

1853/4 25C Arrows and Rays PO1 PCGS #5427

Bought the coin raw at a small coin show in Shreveport, LA (2022) in an unattributed flip. Sent this coin to PCGS 2 times to finally get their graders to wake up and realize what this coin was!! POP 1 coin which is really tougher than you'd think!!

1853-O 25C Arrows and Rays PO1 PCGS #5428

1854-O 25C PO1 PCGS #5433

My good friend Chick M. had been holding this coin for months and months and I totally forgot about it. He carried it to the 2025 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Annual ANA Coin Convention and bought it from him. I already had a PR01 coin in this slot, but this coin is so much better looking and actually has MORE wear!! Thanks Chick!!

1854-O 25C Huge O PO1 PCGS #5434

Back in 2021 when I bought this coin raw and certified, it was a POP 2 coin... Fast forward to January 2024 and it is now a POP 5 coin!! It appears that collecting and certifying Low Ball coins is catching on??

1856-O 25C PO1 PCGS #5439

Interesting buy on E-bay... This coin was listed on E-bay as an 1858-O! I thought it was a 56 but would have to buy it to find out! This is another example of being a POP 1 coin in 2022 when I bought it raw and had it certified... It is now a POP 2 coin...

Bought raw on E-bay and certified in 2021

1857 25C PO1 PCGS #5442

This coin caught my eye in a group of 4 coins on E-bay. The other 3 coins in the lot were absolutely trash with holes, cleaned bent, scratched etc... but, this 1857 looked like something I could take a shot on??? Tom Hallenbeck coins on E-bay.... Thanks Tom!

Bought raw and certified. This is the "Weak O Mintmark" variety. PCGS for some reason does not recognize this particular variety?? Larry Briggs calls it REV B Broken "O" Reverse. "Heavy die polishing removes lower 2/3 of mintmark to the point of vanishing."

1864-S 25C PO1 PCGS #5460

MADE... This was sold by Great Collections in a PCGS FR2 holder which was clearly closer to a PR01 coin than the holder it was in. Obviously, there were other bidders who were thinking the exact same thing as the coin was pricey! Cracked the coin out of its' holder and sent it in raw; now in the correct grade holder! On a side note; am I the only one who thinks the large "S" mintmarks of the era are great looking!!?

1865 25C FR2 PCGS #5461

1867-S 25C FR2 PCGS #5471

Bought raw from Brian G. and certified.

1868-S 25C FR2 PCGS #5473

Purchased raw from Brian Greer in mid January 2024 and certified.... This particular 1868-S has an extremely weak "S" mintmark which was noted by Brian when I bought the coin from him. The mintmark is so weak that PCGS initially checked the coin in as a Philadelphia Mint coin! I requested that they take a second look at the coin as it was in fact an "S" mint.... They looked at the coin again and agreed... Giving PCGS a break as the mintmark is VERY hard to view, and even with a loop you have to search for it!! Larry Briggs book does not mention anything about this fact; if you are reading this and have come across this date/Mint with an extremely weak "S", please leave a comment... Thanks
