PCGS Set Registry Update
The discovery of gold in South Africa began in 1852 with sporadic discoveries made over the following years. By the mid-1880s, the beginning of a gold rush started in a region measuring about 35 square miles and known as the Witwatersrand. The South African currency unit known as the Rand is derived from the latter part of this region's name.
At one time, South Africa was the largest producer of gold worldwide. In 1970, South Africa produced 1,000 metric tons of gold, marking the pinnacle of gold production for South Africa. Many animals have graced the coinage of South Africa, and the first appearance of the black wildebeest on coinage was in 1965 on the reverse of the two cent denomination. This native mammal roams the plains and can run at speeds up to 50 miles per hour. It will give a lion a good run for its money! The rainbow-toned coin shown above is part of a set PCGS has listed titled South African Bronze 2 Cents, Proof (1965-1982).
