The silver dollar was first struck by the United States Mint in 1794, with the first such issues known as the Flowing Hair Dollar. Silver dollar coinage continued to be minted for the next 141 years, with minting of the coin coming to an end in 1935. For the next 35 years, dollar coins were not minted for circulation. In 1969, the year former President Dwight D. Eisenhower sadly died, legislators pitched a coin that honored the World War II general and two-term commander-in-chief. On December 30, 1970, President Richard Nixon signed a bill authorizing the Eisenhower Dollar. Both sides of the coin were designed by Frank Gasparro, who had just six weeks to complete his work. The obverse portrays Eisenhower, with the reverse carrying the Apollo 11 insignia conceived by mission astronaut Michael Collins. Two versions of the coin were released in 1971: a copper-nickel version issued for circulation and a 40% silver issue issued for collectors available for purchase from the U.S Mint. The silver version was welcomed by collectors, but the business-strike iteration was not as warmly accepted within commerce. However, the copper-nickel coin saw widespread use in the Nevada slot-machine circuit. Eisenhower Dollars are popular with collectors today, and this 1971 coin pictured here may cost about $75 for a PCGS MS65 example. This coin and several others are included in the new PCGS Set Registry listing titled 1971 Year Set.
