Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ June Showcase Auction Exceeds Expectations Realizing Over $6.3 Million

Stack’s Bowers Galleries, America’s oldest and most accomplished numismatic auctioneer, is pleased to report its June 2025 Showcase Auction realized $6,330,857, well exceeding presale estimates. Strong bidding was seen throughout the sessions, with gold coins attracting the highest bids. A lovely 1826/6 Quarter Eagle, graded PCGS MS61 realized $132,000, a record for the grade and the second-highest auction price ever realized for the issue.

“We saw strong participation across all areas from the moment the sale opened for online bidding,” said Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “The demand for rare and collectible coins, medals, and tokens remains strong and many record prices were achieved.”

The first session showcased medals, tokens and colonial and federal coins through the 20 Cent piece. Lot 1008, a very rare de Fleury at Stony Point original medal in bronze, brought $28,800. An undated gold medalet of Ulysses S. Grant, reportedly one of only two produced, realized $10,800 in lot 1029. Lots 1034 and 1035, two Pioneer Baseball Club medals, led off The Claremont Collection of Bolen Medals and Tokens, an extensive and high-quality selection that brought out the specialists. Each Pioneer Baseball Club medal realized $6,600, while a PCGS MS65 silver 1920 “Wilson Dollar” in lot 1169 set a world record for the issue in silver at $10,800, far exceeding any previously published price. An extensive selection of rare Civil War and Sutler tokens rounded out the Numismatic Americana offerings with lot 1275, a 119th United States Colored Infantry 10 Cents token, realizing $5,760.

Federal issues in Session 1 that brought notable prices included:

• Lot 1311: 1820 Matron Head Cent. N-15. Rarity-2. Small Date. PCGS MS65RB. Ex Newcomb-Starr-Nicolas-Koshkarian and one of the finest N-15s known. Realized $11,400.
• Lot 1322: 1858 Flying Eagle Cent. Large Letters, High Leaves (Style of 1857), Type I. PCGS MS65. From the J. Francis Abacus Collection. Realized $12,000.
• Lot 1935: 1969-S Lincoln Cent. FS-101. Doubled Die Obverse. PCGS MS63RB. Realized $43,200.
• Lot 1422: 1873 Shield Nickel. Open 3. PCGS MS67. Realized a record price of $15,600.
• Lot 1438: 1916-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS MS66+. Realized $13,200.
• Lot 1478: 1851-O Liberty Seated Dime. Fortin-101. Rarity-3. PCGS MS64. Realized a record price of $26,400.
• Lot 1502: 1940 Mercury Dime. PCGS PR68+. Realized a record price for the issue at $16,800.

Session Two began with the NorthEast Collection of Bust Quarters. A PCGS AU58 1806 B-3 Quarter realized $9,000. An ultra-rare 1806 B-8 with reverse cud graded PCGS VG10 in lot 2023 realized $13,200.

Among other silver coins, a 1900-O Type I/II Barber Quarter graded PCGS MS67, offered in lot 2104, attracted a record price for the grade at $16,800. In lot 2164, a magnificent 1917-D Obverse Mintmark Walking Liberty Half Dollar graded PCGS MS65+ brought $22,800.

Besides the 1826/6 Quarter Eagle in lot 2315 that realized $132,000, other gold highlights included lot 2353, an 1804 BD-1 Half Eagle graded PCGS AU58+ that brought $26,400 and a PCGS MS62+ 1814 BD-1 Half Eagle that sold for $42,000 in lot 2358. Additional standout prices from Session 2 included:

• Lot 2213: 1873-CC Liberty Seated Dollar. OC-1. Rarity-4+. PCGS VF Details-Cleaned. Realized $21,600.
• Lot 2370: 1864 Liberty Head Half Eagle. PCGS AU55. Realized $20,400.
