Stack’s Bowers Galleries offers a second round of rare selections, including rare Territorial and vintage U.S. gold, from the legendary James A. Stack Sr. Collection in February 2026
(Santa Ana, California) – PCGS recently graded dozens of coins, patterns, and related numismatic rarities that Stack’s Bowers Galleries will offer in the James A. Stack Sr. Collection, Part II sale. The auction, featuring 128 lots, is scheduled for early February 2026 and marks a major offering from this legendary collection. These specimens have not been publicly available for at least 75 years.
“We are thrilled to have played a role with Stack’s Bowers Galleries in grading the coins from the magnificent James A. Stack Sr. Collection,” said PCGS President Stephanie Sabin. “The first part of the sale in December showcased dozens of PCGS-graded trophies, including a previously unpublished 1804 Draped Bust Dollar graded PCGS PR65 that took $6 million. The exciting marquee of rarities that are being offered in the second James A. Stack Sr. Collection sale just goes to show that top coins end up in PCGS holders.”
“From the first moment I held these coins nearly two years ago, I knew that Mr. Stack’s coins would bewitch the market,” commented Vicken Yegparian, executive vice president at Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “The long-lost 1798 Small Eagle $5 from the 1946 Atwater Collection sale, the sole finest certified 1911-D $10 graded MS66, and 28 pieces of Territorial Gold, some of which haven’t been offered publicly in over a century, have captivated collectors’ attention since we first announced the collection last summer. Influenced by PCGS’s expert grading and Stack’s Bowers cataloging and marketing, we look forward to market-leading results in the second James A. Stack Sr. sale on February 3.”
Among some of the highlights of the sale is the 1827 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle graded PCGS MS62, a classic rarity with fewer than a dozen at that grade level or higher, is another stunner from the revered James A. Stack Sr. cabinet. This highly attractive example showcases sharp strike and satiny luster with resplendence that few vintage gold coins possess. The 1854-S Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a landmark rarity that offers only 14 known examples from a mintage of only 246. This specimen, graded by PCGS with VG Details, represents the rare opportunity to purchase an iconic numismatic trophy.
Along with rare gold hailing from the federal catalog are other vintage marvels, such as Territorials and patterns, that belong in collections of exemplary repute. The 1851 Augustus Humbert $50, Lettered Edge, K-4 50 DC, 887 THOUS., 50 on Reverse, graded PCGS AU Details, makes a rare public appearance in the James A. Stack Sr. Collection sale. Another elusive rarity that crosses the block is the 1879 $4 Flowing Hair Stella, which lays claim to the coveted “100 Greatest U.S. Coins” title. This dazzling specimen is graded PCGS PR65 and awaits residency in its next prestigious cabinet.
There are dozens of other classic numismatic treasures up for bids in the James A. Stack Sr. Collection, Part II, which will be offered by Stack’s Bowers Galleries. The sale will take place on February 3, 2026, at the auction firm’s Griffin Studios in Costa Mesa, California. For more information about the sale, please visit https://stacksbowers.com/.
