Eight varieties are known.

No. 1
Obverse: 3 in date high, 5 almost centered under curl; upper left star points to center of upper curl; lower left most distant from bust with upper right somewhat nearer cap; lower right close to hair, upper point nearer than lower.
Reverse: The same as 1834 [Browning] 3.
Obverse die has a slight crack from bottom of 5, extending out in field about half the distance toward lower right star. Reverse cracked at top over eagle as in 1834 No. 3.

Die States: I. Perfect obverse. Only two business strikes seen.

One is known countermarked (1849) for Costa Rica: lion passant, HABILITADA POR EL GOBIERNO (probably stamped along with pistareens or 2 reales coins, with which these quarters would have passed at par). Obverse: The same as [Browning] 1.
Reverse: The same as 1834 [Browning] 2.
Obverse die cracked as in No. 1, but crack longer, extending through bottom of 3 and 5 and out in field about two-thirds of the distance toward lower right star. Reverse die perfect.
Coarse dentils; high 3; extended crack through 35 to right.
Coarse dentils; close high 25 C., small weak period; forked tongue.

Rarity-2.

Rarer Uncirculated than some other varieties of this year.
