| Stack's Bowers | Auction | Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction U.S. Coins | Sep-2025 | A simply outstanding Indian quarter eagle irrespective of date or issuing mint, both sides are bathed in a rich blend of frosty luster and vivid golden-orange color. Sharply struck, as well, and truly a delight to behold. One of the more underrated Indian quarter eagles, the second year 1909 is the third rarest issue of the type in Mint State after the 1911-D and 1914. As a premium quality Gem certified by PCGS and verified by CAC the present coin is a strong contender for CC#1 ranking for the issue. It is the single finest Mint State 1909 $2.50 graded by PCGS, and although NGC reports three grading events in MS-66+ (with none finer) and CAC has stickered four coins at their MS-66 level, the fact that the latter total includes coins certified both MS-66 and MS-66+ by PCGS and NGC obscures the true CAC Stickered Population of the 1909 in MS-66+. Regardless, this is a phenomenal coin that has few, if any peers among Mint State Indian quarter eagles of this date. It is worthy of inclusion in another world class collection of classic U.S. Mint gold coinage. |
