The Small Cent, first introduced in 1856, turned out to be a tremendous shot in the arm for a new American hobby – coin collecting. Thus, in 1858, in response to growing demand, Mint officials offered a set of 12 Proof Small Cents. 4 of the coins bore the familiar Flying Eagle design, 4 featured a small, scrawny eagle, and 4 had an Indian Head design. An estimated 50 sets were struck, following by restriking of individual issues. Although most of these sets have long since been broken up, a new and exciting challenge is to rebuild them. This is one of the easiest and least expensive patterns sets to complete, plus all of the coins are beautiful.
