As one of the original three branch mints opened in 1838, the Charlotte mint struck small denomination gold coins for 23 years until its closure in 1861 due to events surrounding the Civil War. Unlike the Dahlonega mint, there were no $3 gold pieces struck at the Charlotte mint. Consequently, the basic set consists of only three coins: the $1 gold piece, and the $2 1/2 and $5 Liberty coins. Output from this mint was always on the low side compared with Philadelphia and New Orleans, and even a very small set such as this can provide a challenge to complete in high grade.
