The Proof Set for 1892 marked the debut of the new silver coins by Charles Barber. A dime, quarter and half showing a laureled head of Liberty facing right replaced Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Seated design which had dominated the circulating silver coinage since the late 1830s. Being the first of a new design, demand was apparently quite high as some 1,245 pieces were struck making this a readily obtainable date. The gold was struck in slightly higher than normal quantities, with 93 Double Eagles struck. Only 72 Eagles were made however, limiting the number of "complete" sets which can be assembled.
