The 1884 Proof Set was issued during a period when business strike mintages of Quarters and Halves had nearly ground to a halt in order to fulfill the requirements of Morgan Dollar coinage. Circulation strike Three Cent Nickel pieces are also quite tough. Consequently, acquiring Proof examples of these denominations is often far easier than their regular issue counterparts. The toughest coin in this seven piece set will be the Dollar, while most of the other coins probably won't present a major challenge. The gold, naturally, will be. The 1884 Double Eagle is a Proof Only issue, and a six-figure coin almost regardless of condition. The Eagle, while not quite as expensive, is very tough to find. With a mintage of only 45 pieces, they appear at auction maybe once or at most, twice a year.
