The 1883 Proof Set is a large one, as three different Nickels were struck that year. The Shield Nickel was in its final year, and two varieties of the new "Liberty" or "V" nickel were made; both without and with the word "Cents" on the reverse. It was also the final year for the Trade Dollar as a regular mint issue. (While a few were made in 1884 and 1885, they are not listed in the Mint Director's report.) The gold again this year presents a special challenge, as the 1883 Double Eagle was a Proof only issue and with only about two dozen of the original 92 known, it brings a solid six-figure price when sold. The other gold Proofs are of typical rarity for the period, and most are five-figure coins.
