The Proof Set for 1882 is typical for the period. Roughly 1,100 each of the silver coins were made, and 3,100 of the base metal issues leaving sufficient quantities available today to enable most dedicated collectors to complete the set. A tiny quantity of business strike Double Eagles were made this year, but only a dozen or so Proofs remain of the 59 struck, and their appearance is infrequent at best. The other gold coins are all scarce to rare. For example, as of 2016, a Proof 1882 Eagle has not appeared at auction for seven years. When attempting these sets with gold, a good deal of patience will be required.
