Slightly under 1,000 each of the Silver proofs were made for 1881 and just shy of 3,600 were made of the base metal (Copper and Nickel) coins. All of these are of average rarity for their issue, and the keys to the silver, will be the Morgan and Trade Dollar. The gold will be tough as one might expect from coins with original mintages of between 40 and 60 pieces. It must be remembered that due to their high face value, many Eagles and Double Eagles were spent, so survival rates usually run about one third of the original mintage.
