The non-gold Proof Set for 1876 contained eight coins, three in base metal and five in silver. Unlike the two years that followed, none of the coins were Proof only issues, and mintage quantities for the silver coins were fairly high at 1,150 pieces. This is a popular set due to it being the centennial of the nation's independence. That occasion must also have led so a small uptick in interest, as the gold coins show a mintage of 45 pieces. While still quite low on an absolute basis, it is more than the 20 or 30 pieces typically struck during this period. Acquiring all the gold denominations will still require many years though, as PCGS certified examples of the higher denominations appear at auction only a few times per decade.
