The basic 1867 Proof Set (without the two Nickel varieties) is not an extremely difficult set. All the coins are of average rarity for the period, and with a nominal mintage of 625 pieces, the silver coins can be found without too much effort. However, adding the 1867 With Rays Nickel turns an ordinary endeavor into a very challenging one. While the exact mintage is unknown, most estimates vary between 25 and 50 pieces. Acquiring a nice example will easily run into the mid five figures. The gold is always tough, and an above average mintage of 50 pieces for 1867 might suggest they are a bit more plentiful than other years in this period. That however, is not the case, and with only about a dozen Double Eagles known, six figures will be required to get a decent piece. The Eagles are even tougher, and our Auction Prices Realized shows no PCGS pieces sold at auction so far this century except for one impaired Proof in 2010.
