1863 Proof Set with Gold

Despite being in the midst of a Civil War, the nation managed to produce 460 Proof Silver issues for 1863. Consequently, this set contains no major rarities or difficult pieces. Of course, the Silver Dollar in high grade will run into the mid to upper five-figures, but remains somewhat affordable in mid-MS grades. The notion of affordability fades away when the six gold coins are included. With a mere 30 pieces originally struck and between a third and a half still extant, opportunities to acquire the higher denomination pieces occur perhaps a couple times per decade.
