The 1971 Mint Set introduced the first dollar coin struck for circulation since 1935. While it certainly could not be confused with any of the other circulating coinage, it was simply too large to be practical and failed to circulate outside of gambling casinos where the slots were glad to accept them. As would be the case for most if its life, a 40% silver (non proof) version was struck in San Francisco for collectors.
