1916 Mint Set with Gold

This can fairly be said to be the first true Mint Set of the 20th century. In this year, our nation's silver coinage was completely revamped, showing different designs for the Dime, Quarter and Half for the first time in history. And what designs they were! In the opinion of most, the Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter and Walking Liberty Half set a high water mark for U.S. coin design which has yet to be surpassed. Unfortunately for the prospective collector of this set, two of the coins rank as major 20th century rarities. The 1916-D dime and the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter are among the most coveted (and expensive) U.S. coins of the century, and putting together a gem quality set is not for the collector on a tight budget. The inclusion of the three San Francisco gold coins (Half Eagle, Eagle and Double Eagle) does not complicate matters too much, as they remain overshadowed by the two rarities mentioned earlier. But due to their limited mintage, top grade examples are scarce and run well into five-figures.
