The year 1891 marked the swan song for the Seated Liberty series of silver coins, which had begun in the late 1830s and had defined American coinage design for most of the 19th century. New Orleans struck only 68,000 quarters that year, making it a semi-key issue. Fortunately, none of the 1891 Morgan Dollars are great rarities, though that would change the following year, and until 1897, certain Morgans would be the keys for a high grade mint set. Even though the 1891 Morgans are not show stoppers, another large coin will be – the Double Eagles are the tough ones here! The 1891-P is a low mintage issue (1,390 struck) and commands a low six-figure price in mid-Mint State grades. The 1891-CC is also a challenge, with fewer than 20 Mint State pieces graded by PCGS, and a five figure coin above XF.
