1881 Mint Set with Gold

The 1881 Mint Set contains a few odd coins. The 1881-CC Morgan is the antithesis of a condition rarity. In fact, its value in "Good" is nearly half that of its MS-65 value. Incredibly, four MS-68s have been graded of this date. For a change, the tough coins this year are the Nickel and Dime, both of which had mintages far below average for the series. Because the nation's silver bullion was being used for towering quantities of Morgan Dollars, the Quarter and Half were again made in minuscule quantities. The gold for 1881 is headlined by the Philadelphia Double Eagle. Though not quite as rare as the 1882-P, the 1881-P is quite scarce and remains a solid five-figure coin even in circulated grades. The Quarter Eagle this year is also quite tough. With a mintage of only 640 pieces, even circulated coins are few and far between. The Carson City Half Eagle and Eagle are both difficult, and nice Mint State examples are really no where to be found. Even the Three Dollar gold piece gets in on the act this year, sporting its lowest mintage of the series (500 pcs).
