The 1846 Mint Set was the first of a series of fairly small sets during the mid and late 1840s. While both Philadelphia and New Orleans struck silver coins, only the Half and Dollar were stuck at the "O" mint this year. Oddly, it is the small silver coins this year that are a major challenge. Both the Philadelphia Half Dime and Dime were struck in very low quantities this year and are major keys to the series. Even the well circulated pieces are tough, and only a handful of Mint State pieces are known.
