While for most Mint Sets of this period, it is the gold that provides the challenge, in 1823, the Quarter holds the big "Stop" sign. It is believed most of the reported mintage of 17,800 pieces was dated 1822 or 1821. Whether true or not, the fact remains that only about two to three dozen have survived and these, mostly in lower grades. No Mint State pieces are known. The Cent is also a tougher-than-normal date, but with the extreme rarity of the Quarter, this is a minor consideration.
