U.S. Nickels Complete Set with Major Varieties, Proof (1866-present)

A complete set of proof nickels has a few standout rarities. In the second year of the Shield nickel, they removed the rays from the reverse. However, a handful of Proofs were made in 1867 with the Rays reverse, making this one the key coin in this set. Even the 1866 with Rays proof is no slouch. The proof-only 1877 and 1878 are also uncommon. In the Liberty Nickel era the 1885 is the most expensive acquisition, but not by virtue of its mintage or population, both of which are higher than average for the series. It's simply the demand for the date that makes it more costly. Most of the Matte Proof Buffalo nickels are tough, particularly the 1916. The Jefferson nickels are all fairly common, with the exception of the 1971 "No S" Proof.
