As soon as you see your first Small Eagle gold coin from the 18th century you are hooked! There is no getting around the fact that a complete type set of U.S. gold coins is a thing of great beauty. After the standard 8-piece gold type set is assembled (the 20th century coins of two $20 gold pieces, two $10 gold pieces, two Half Eagles and two Quarter Eagles) the temptation is almost irresistible to expand. After adding the three different gold dollar types and the $3 gold piece, you are still only one-third of the way to completion. There's the Draped Bust, Capped Bust and Classic Head coins, the magnificent $4 Stellas, and on and on. What a set! Some of the rarities include the 1796 no stars $2 1/2, the 1808 $2 1/2 and the reduced diameter Capped Bust $5s. One of the rarest of all United States type coins in top condition is the 1838-1839 $10 Liberty.
