Today, with the value of silver what it is, it seems strange that it would have been substituted for nickel in the five cent piece, but nickel was apparently a more critical war material. This is a short and easy set to complete, even in high grade (MS67-68). But it remains an interesting set to remember the time when the value of silver was so low that 1/20 ounce could be put into a nickel. Today, the silver value of a "War Nickel" is around one dollar. If the five major varieties are included, there are a few tougher coins to locate such as the 1943/2-P, the 1943 Doubled Eye and the various Doubled Die Reverses found on the 1945-P.
