The $5 2012-W Star Spangled Banner coins were struck to commemorate the Star Spangled Banner song. The song was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, and it was officially declared as the National Anthem on March 03, 1931. The Mint struck four different versions of this coin to commemorate the song. It struck this $5 Mint State coin, the $5 Proof and a $1 Mint State and Proof version.
