Owner's Comments

2002 Liberia $1 Elsbeth Tucher PR68DCAM { PCGS-5 }. Elsbeth Tucher was a member of the Nuremberg patrician family of Tucher . She became known through her depiction in a painting by Albrecht Dürer , which is in the Old Masters Picture Gallery. I recall seeing this denomination in circulation in Germany in the early 1960's, at the time worth $5. An interesting time when there weren't daily, weekly or even monthly changes in the exchange rates of the major world currencies, and the dollar was backed by silver. This is from the series of coins bidding farewell to European currencies with the adoption of the standardized Euro. This was from the standard set of banknotes in circulation during an approximate 20 year period, and are joined in remembrance on this African country's exonumia by a commemorative paying tribute to artists and musicians issued just one year, and reprised in one additional year. One design selected for an official Liberian coin was the Clara Schumann 100 DM banknote.
