2001-S Clad Half Dollar PR70DCAM: Capitol Visitor Center
{ PCGS-3 } (Mar'2025)
Mintage: 77,962 (proof)
Flawless black mirrors pops with this simply rendered commemorative designs with a very wordy reverse offering just a few top-grade proof specimens from PCGS. Interesting concept to show the outline of the current day capitol silhouetted behind the North Wing of the original capitol building two centuries earlier; still, a very plain "token-looking" commemorative with open broad flat surfaces in both the fields and devices making that perfect coin elusive. The shadowy future capitol obscures the horse and buggy in the foreground. The coin recalls the turn of the nineteenth century capitol, and the reverse features 16 stars arranged in a circle for the sixteen states in 1800. The wordy text records the 32 senators and 106 congressmen. This piece is quite flashy in hand with the heavily frosted devices and multiply reflective mirrors. Until 2024 only one Top-Pop perfect specimen had surfaced, when a few elusive companion pieces made an appearance.

The 2001-P Capitol Visitor Commemorative Half Dollar was issued to commemorate the convening of the Capitol Building in 1800. It was also the first commemorative Half Dollar that had been issued in a 5 year hiatus. The Mint struck a Half Dollar and Dollar coin commemorating the Capitol Building. Both these denominations were struck in an Uncirculated and a Proof format.
