To commemorate U.S. participation in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, the U.S. Mint issued specially designed Silver Dollars and Half Eagles ($5 gold pieces). The obverse of the Half Eagle features a two-thirds profile of Lady Liberty portrayed as Nike, the goddess of victory; the reverse shows a stylized flame beneath Olympic rings. Both Mint State and Proof versions were sold to collectors at a premium over the gold value. Portions of the profits derived from the sale of these commemorative coins were given to the United States Olympic Committee. As with the preceding issues, all of the Seoul Olympiad Half Eagles were struck at the West Point Mint.
