The low mintage, second lowest in the series to the 1911-D, makes most people think this issue is even more rare than it really is. (Actually, the 1908 No Motto ranks sqarely in the middle with respect to both overall Mint State rarity and condition rarity.) This is not to say that the 1908 No Motto is common, because it most definitely is not. In fact, in any given Mint State grade it can be considered very rare. The Mint State population is quite evenly spread between the grades from MS-60/62 to MS-64 and there are probably about a third the number of gems as there are coins in each of the first three categories. A few (probably five or so) truly superb examples of this issue are also known to exist.

The 1908 No Motto is almost always sharply struck (more so than the 1907 No Periods) and the surfaces are somewhat frosty but more often rather satiny. The lustre is typically excellent and color is a strong point of this issue, usually medium orange gold, often with a rich greenish gold tint or highlights. Top quality examples of this issue are definitely among the most attractive of the series.
