The Philippine Islands were ceded to the United States in 1899 by Spain after the end of the Spanish-American War. For the first few years, regular-issue US coinage from San Francisco was shipped to the Philippines to facilitate commerce. The US Mint then struck 1-centavo, 5-centavo, 10-centavo, 20-centavo, 50-centavo, and one-peso coins for the islands during the period from 1903-1920, after which all production was taken over by the new US Mint in Manila. Mint: Philadelphia. Mintage: 2,791,000.
