The 1901 Half Dollar is common in just about every grade in which it is found.  The exception, of course, is in the grades of MS66 and MS67 where, like most Barber Halves, this date is very scarce.  None are known above MS67.  The 1901 is decidedly less common in superb condition than the 1900 and 1902, but it is not nearly as rare as the 1903 -- it more closely mirrors the 1904 and 1905.

The superb Thaine coin (mentioned below by Akers) is currently in a PCGS MS67 holder.  It is a remarkable coin, with intense luster and gorgeous color.  It's companion is the equally appealing PCGS MS67, formerly of the Shireman Collection.

This was one of the last Half Dollar [dates] added to Dr. [Thaine B.] Price's Collection. The reason for this is simple; in years of searching, he was never able to find a really high quality piece with the toning and eye appeal that he wanted. This long search for a Gem 1901 conclusively proved to me what I had long felt to be the case, namely, that this date and the other Philadelphia Mint issues from 1902-1905 are decidedly rare and underrated. They have always been regarded as little more than moderately common issues when, in fact, they are as rare and, in some cases, more rare than some of the popular mintmarked issues of the 1890's and early 1900's that have long been correctly recognized as rarities.
