This variiety has a slightly repunched date, with the most obvious doubling on the top and base of the final 9 (see the attribution image shown above).  Collectors consider this variety to be so significant that they added it to the pantheon of the Top 100 VAM varieties.  According to VAMWorld (at www.VAMWorld.com), Bill Fivaz discovered this variety in October 1973, so collectors have had decades in which to search for them.  

PCGS has certified over 100 examples of this variety, giving us enough of a sample size to build a meaningful condition census.  The result is a Top Ten that includes all MS65's plus a PCGS MS66 and an NGC MS67 (ex Eliasberg).

We encourage all collectors to look carefully at every high-grade 1899-S Dollar they see...we suspect there are some valuable, unattributed VAM 7's waiting to be discovered.
