The 1898 is definitely a scarce date, comparable overall to the 1877, 1878, 1888, 1889 and 1905 but not quite as rare as the others mentioned (except the 1889) in strictly uncirculated condition. Choice mint state specimens are seldom seen and true gem examples are so infrequently available that they must be considered rare.
