1896 $5 MS65 Certification #25510506, PCGS #8392

Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88)

The 1896 has a comparatively low mintage and it is a scarce coin in all grades. Most known specimens are in the higher grades, EF or AU, but strictly uncirculated examples are not at all common. As a date, the 1896 is the rarest Liberty Head Half Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint after 1890, although it is not as rare in choice mint state as the 1891.
