1892 was the first year in which employees at the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia produced quarters bearing the design created by Charles Barber. Production of both the regular issue coins for circulation and Proofs for collectors was substantially higher than that of the previous year, partly because of demand for the new type.  Over 1,200 Proofs were struck - a new record that also superceded the mintages of all previous years.

The quality of the Proof 1892 Barber Quarters is excellent and a small handful of PR68 examples are known.  Perhaps half the population shows Cameo contrast and approximately one tenth show Deep Cameo contrast.
