The 1891-S is a common date in any grade short of choice uncirculated condition. It is very similar in overall rarity to the 1897-S and 1907-S and it is available more often, and in higher grade, than any S-Mint Double Eagle prior to this point except 1876-S. Gem quality examples of this date are very scarce but that can be said about most Liberty Head Double Eagles except for the eight or ten most common dates of the series.Ron Guth
The Saddle Ridge Hoard of gold coins, discovered in northern California in 2013, contained twenty-six 1891-S Double Eagles, including one of the few counterfeit coins in the hoard. Also included were a dozen Mint State examples, none of which were graded high enough to impact the PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census.
