This is one of the real "sleeper" dates in the series in proof. I have seen fewer proofs of this date than of any other quarter eagle after 1880, including the highly regarded 1881 and 1885. However, because the 1889 is more common as a business strike, the price of the proof has been somewhat depressed in relation to the other dates of the 1880's.PCGS #
