1887-S 10C MS65 Certification #21552355, PCGS #4699
Owner's Comments
Mintage: 4,454,450
Obverse Dies: 16 Known
A common date in all grades including Mint State through MS64 but becomes difficult in MS65 and rare in MS66.
For 1887 San Francisco dimes, attributing obverse dies can be a difficult task for several reasons. First there are only minor differences in the date position due to the size of the digits in the date. For reverse dies, both the position and tilt of the Medium S mintmark plays an important role in reverse die identification.
Plate Coin: F-108, Prooflike with multi color toning.

With its hefty mintage of almost 4.5 million coins, the 1887-S is one of the more common dates in the series. Like many of the dates from the 1880s, this is considered a generic, type coin, and it will not command a premium for the date. In high grades, the 1887-S is a little tougher to find. Anything above MS65 is considered rare.
The quality of the strike on 1887-S Dimes is generally good to above-average. Occasionally, the mintmark is filled, creating the appearance of a blob mintmark on lower-grade examples.
