Thje 1886-S VAM-2 is included among the Top 100 VAM varieties, automatically adding to its popularity and allure.  On VAM-2, the mintmark was repunched with a slight rotation of the positioning between punches.  As a result, each of the serifs of the mintmark shows slight doubling.  Because it is a fairly subtle variety, it is possible to cherry-pick this variety.  Fortunately for collectors, there is a ready supply.  VAMworld.com rates this variety as R-4 (very scarce), but that translates into tens of thousands of examples,  Thus, collectors will have no problem adding an example to their collection at a reasonable price.

The most common grade in which this variety is found apears ot be MS63.  None are known above MS66.  Prooflike 1886-S VAM-2's are very rare and DMPL examples are even more so.
