Expert Comments

Ron Guth

The 1884 Liberty Head Nickel has the fifth highest Proof mintage of the series, making it an affordable example for type purposes.  Most of the survivors are in excellent condition, usually PR-64 or better.  Cameo examples are scarce and Deep Cameo examples are extremely rare.

The finest 1884 Proof Nickels certified by PCGS (as of December 2011) include: 46 in PR-66; 3 in PR-67CAM; and 1 PR-66DCAM.
