Proof 1883 Half Dollars are scarce thanks to an innately small mintage of only 875 coins, and they are popular because the mintage of circulation-strike 1883 Half Dollars is a mere 8,000 pieces. As a result, collectors who seek an example of this date are often forced to choose between Mint State and Proof versions simply because they are both so rare.
This is one of those dates where it is difficult to tell whether a coin is Proof or Mint State, thus we recommend certification.
Non-Cameo Proofs are the norm for this date. Approximately one in four examples will exhibit Cameo contrast. Deep Cameo example are very rare, but they do show up on the mark occasionally.
