Proof 1879 Shield Nickels can be found with a normal date, a tripled date, and an 1879/8 overdate.  The overdate looks less like a 9/8 than it does a 9 with raised metal within the loops of the 9.  However, Breen, in his observation, said "Forms a small minority of the proofs", but the PCGS Population Report dispels this assertion.  PCGS shows populations (as of June 2011) of 466 of the "normal" 1879 Proof Nickels and 490 of the 1879/8 Proof Nickels.  The finest example is a single PCGS PR-69, the only Proof Shield Nickel (of any date!) to have earned this lofty grade.
