The 1876 is the second most common Philadelphia Mint Type II Double Eagle after the 1873 Open 3. It is fairly easy to obtain in any grade up to average uncirculated. Even choice (63 quality) mint state specimens are seen fairly often and it is only in gem condition that the 1876 is rare. Overall, the 1876 is most similar in rarity to such earlier issues as the 1850, 1851, 1852, and 1853 although it is available more often in Unc. than any of those four dates.
