This date is not as scarce as any of the preceeding issues from the San Francisco Mint and it is npt especially difficult to locate in circulated condition, even AU. In full mint state, however, the 1874-S is quite scarce and choice and gem quality uncs, though known, are definitely rare. In terms of both overall rarity and condition rarity, the 1874-S is very similar to the 1878-S. In my comments on the 1874-CC, I noted that mere mintage figures often do not tell the story and can sometimes even lead one to a totally erroneous conclusion. The 1874-S is another such date. It is generally considered to be the equivalent to the 1875-S and 1876-S which have similar mintages. but in Unc., the 1874-S is very difficult to obtain while both the 1875-S and 1876-S are relatively common.
