The 1874 is generally considered to be a relatively "common date" Type II Double Eagle but it is really quite scarce in all grades. In fact, it is a little more rare overall than such dates as the 1865, 1866 and 1872 and it is considerably more rare than the "hoard" date 1867. It is virtually identical in overall rarity to the 1875. In strictly uncircualted condition, the 1874 is very scarce although not as rare as the forementioned 1865 and 1866. Choice and gem quality uncs exist but they are definitely rare.
