1872 50C G4 Certification #85751482, PCGS #6333
Expert Comments
Ron Guth
In 1872, production of Half Dollars at the Philadelphia Mint dropped by more than a quarter from the previous year to a total of 880,600 coins. This adds a premium to this date across the board, but especially in the higher grades. Though they are scarce, Mint State 1872 Half Dollars can be found with patience in MS64. Gems are considered rare and it is difficult to find this date in MS66. When purchasing this date, look for well-struck examples with strong radial lines in the stars and full talon and feather details on the reverse.
