In the first volume of my series of books on U.S. gold coins I remarked that the 1872 gold dollar was one of my favorite date in the series. The 1872 quarter eagle is also a favorite of mine, particularly in uncirculated condition, and I have seen fewer Uncs. of this date than I have proofs, although proofs are obviously also very rare. Actually, the 1872 is rare in all grades and is substantially undervalued in any condition.PCGS #
