In 1871, the mintage of Proof Silver Dollars dropped slightly to only 960 pieces. Again, it is doubtful if all were sold, but most were. The number and distribution of the Proof 1871 Silver Dollars certified by PCGS tracks those of 1870 almost exactly, including every grade level. Like the 1870 Proofs, the 1871's are seen most frequently in PR63 and PR64. Gems are very rare and only a handful can be considered ssuperb (PR66 or better). Likewise, Cameo Proofs represent approximately one-sixth of the total population of certified coins, and only one in twenty Proofs is a Deep Cameo.
